The author of Tentmaking: The Life and Work of Business As Missions. Patrick is currently teaching in an adjunct position at Colombia International University. Patrick has started, failed, sold, or given away, 11 businesses. These businesses have been key in launching 5 new churches and 2 fellowships. He also mentors and coaches businessmen working throughout the 10/40 Window. He is the founder of the OPEN Network, a network of 415 Business as Mission workers and tentmakers. He is the co-founder of Empresas Vida International, which is an organization that creates businesses in strategic locations for workers from the Global South. He also is the co-founder of the Nexus, which is a 21st century model for sending BAM workers to unengaged areas.

Indiana Wesleyan University
Since the beginning of the 2010 spring semester, Indiana Wesleyan University has had the first BAM student group on its campus. IWU Students for BAM was started by students who desired to see how their skills could be used as part of the Great Commission. The group’s mission has been to educate, equip, and network students with others who have realized their greater purpose within their workplace. Since its beginning, the group has seen students gain connections and travel overseas. The group wants to encourage other universities to start their own groups and take their own students on BAM trips.
In 1992, in the days of the tent-fakers, Joe joined a team of western church-planters working in Southeast Asia. Joe learned the hard way the importance of making sense, dollars and cents, in his relationships. This led to Joe earning a degree in Economic Development and establishing a foundation. As his western co-workers left, Joe inherited a team of well-paid national church-planters. Moving from dependence to sustainability became a felt need, which led to a small business that survived until Joe returned to the States in late 2001.In 2002, when many NGO’s were banned or labeled suspect, Joe shifted to helping western believers establish businesses in restricted access countries. By 2006, Joe and his teammates began providing business training and seed funds to indigenous church-planters. The team’s asset based business training, has helped over 1000 indigenous church-planters launch businesses.
Growers First Wheaton
Growers First Wheaton is a group from Wheaton University that strives to raise awareness for ethical business and ethical consumerism by fostering a community of students from every discipline united by their compassion for the world and its people. Partnering with Growers First Coffee, Growers First Wheaton provides tangible exposure to ethical business practices through spring break trips to sustainable coffee farms and production facilities in Honduras. Additionally, on the Wheaton Campus, Growers First Wheaton hosts awareness coffee house events to spread the word about ethical businesses and ethical consumerism through the sale of Growers First’s coffee. Most recently, Growers First Wheaton has launched a coffee catering business on campus, providing ethically produced coffee to the Wheaton College community and proving that ethics does not need to be sacrificed at the expense of price or quality.
Sung Heidi (SJ)
SJ, his wife, and their three young children have called Central Asia their home since January 2001. The past 11 years have been filled with the realities of living in a developing country, but they wouldn’t trade it for the world. Since 2008, SJ, along with his business partner, have been working on building a poultry business in a Muslim nation. Focusing on holistic transformation, their company (OA) currently has 45 employees and is projected to have $1.5 million in sales in 2011. Along with quality poultry products and values-based customer service, OA’s vision is to see lives transformed and churches started in and through the business by the power of the Gospel.
Since 2009, the School of Business at Taylor University in Upland, Indiana has sponsored a Business as Ministry spring break trip to Central America. Working directly with Partners Worldwide, the Taylor students present practical business training seminars to micro entrepreneurs who have limited formal education, but have a desire to grow their enterprises. In their workshop, you will learn how BAM is put into action by the Taylor students and the impact of this ministry on those being served and those who are serving.
Scott is married to Karen with 3 children and lives near St. Louis, MO. Scott is the Managing Director for Compass Global and serves customers and partners in North America, Europe, and Asia. Compass Global works to assist companies with an Asian strategy for partnering with trusted technology partners in India and/or assessing market entry and growth strategies for accessing the growing Asian markets. Compass Global has established, like-minded and trusted partners to help companies realize a global strategy.
Prior to starting Compass Global, Scott served as the Asia Pacific Program Manager and ultimately as the Global Account Executive of Trax Technologies serving a Fortune 100 customer. Years ago, Scott lived in Hong Kong for 2 years and has been involved with an Indian technology start-up business, directed a not-for-profit called EC Institute (a focus on the intersection of globalization, business and missions), was the Director of Business as Missions for Advancing Churches in Missions Commitment (ACMC).
Currently, Scott serves on the board of his local church, the Global Business Leadership Center, and of Friends of Immanuel University. (We are building a Christian University in Hyderabad, India, with God’s direction, for the Dalits and the other marginalized people of India.)

Greg Elzinga serves as the Managing Director for Partners Worldwide where he provides operational leadership and guidance for the organization with a concentration in the areas of resource development and member engagement. Prior to joining Partners Worldwide in 2007, Greg had a 16 year career in corporate sales management and leadership with AT&T, FedEx and Aon. Greg has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from Calvin College and a Masters of Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University.Greg’s passion is to encourage and equip Christian businesspeople to maximize the impact of their role in helping to build God’s Kingdom through the global marketplace. Greg and his wife Jacqui and have three children and live in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Mr. Atkisson served five years in a South Asian country with a team. Their venue was to lovingly plant churches. Part of their observable service to the culture was a business, which brought “foreigners” who toured the country, trekked in the mountains, and contributed to the economy by their purchases of local goods and services. The business’ clientele also furthered their presence by the team member’s positive attitudes, respectful behavior, and honor of the culture.Mr. Atkisson personally endeavors to mobilize intellectually and spiritually qualified personnel who can develop business entry strategies, or skillfully coalesce with those being developed, to enter the un-engaged.

Doug and Jen Witzig have served with TEAM (www.teamworld.org) since 1993. After a 4-year term in Hong Kong, where they studied Cantonese and assisted in two church plants, the Witzigs moved into Mainland China in 1997. During that time, Doug taught business English and helped start and manage a Business as Mission (BAM) venture: the Soaring Glory Tent Co. factory, which produced window awnings for the DIY market in the USA. Both of these jobs allowed the Witzigs and their team to reside in the community and build relationships with the goal of evangelism, discipleship, and church planting. The Witzigs have three sons: Zachary (16), Luke (12) and Joel (9), all born in Hong Kong. In the summer of 2009, the Witzig family relocated to Morton, IL. Doug is now working with TEAM as the Business as Mission Coordinator. In this new role, Doug is helping to develop BAM strategies and to recruit the teams of missionaries and businesspeople who will serve together in BAM church-planting ventures in a variety of overseas locations.

The Kumars are a young couple who have worked in a BAM capacity in professional environments in India and urban America alike. They are committed to working with contextualized communities of faith in the Indian and Nepali context. The Kumars continue to strive in innovating and developing new ideas for relevant and practical cultural forms of service and worship. Both of them have had extensive cross-cultural and inter-religious experiences that set them up for some unique perspectives in a rapidly changing globalized society. One of them is an Indiana Wesleyan Alumni.
Chris Thorpe has been a BAM practitioner in East Asia for 18-years. He has participated in rural and urban work environments and assisted other entrepreneurs in developing business platforms. Chris helped create and develop rural relief & development work in minority areas, renewed the vision in an urban manufacturing operation, and started up, an urban renewable energy business. During the past four years, Chris has created and operated a BAM Journey program that mobilizes young entrepreneurs to learn the theory of BAM. Program activities also validate the BAM model through visiting practitioners and working internships while learning the language and culture of the land.
